Classroom Management: Class Dojo

Class Dojo

Classroom management and communication with families are a big part of being a good and effective teacher. With technology in our lives becoming an increasingly dominant presence over time, it is time that teachers also integrate effective technology for classroom management and communication with families about it. The app that I discovered to be most efficient and effective was Class Dojo.

This app is used to document and track behaviors observed in children and communicate with families efficiently of a child’s day or of the details of a certain incident.

On Class Dojo, I can create profiles of each child to keep filing documents easier online and to be able to visualize their progress in behaviors much more effectively. The portal on the app allows for and encourages easy communication and collaboration with families.

The “Class Story” section of the app can be used as a virtual bulletin board - especially during remote education when the physical presence of a community bulletin board was taken away from the classroom experience.

For example, if a child displayed aggressive behavior such as intentionally and repeatedly kicking the teacher, I would input the incident into the app - specifically into the respective child’s portfolio and use the messaging option of the app to communicate any details that needs to be shared with the family if they are unable to be reached by phone initially (it is better to communicate directly with families on the phone or in person - if in person, NOT in front of the child). Inputting this incident into the child’s portfolio will create a history of certain behaviors with details such as what time the incident happened and what led up to it. These details and other important data will make it easier to discern any patterns in the displayed behaviors to possibly prevent it from happening again. The app can also communicate between families of any similar behaviors that may occur at home which can help teachers make the connection between certain behaviors and its triggers.
