As a current preschool teacher working on a team of teachers, there is a lot of collaboration that goes into the creation of curriculum and lesson plans. Rather than working on one physical document and passing it back and forth between the teachers, our center has found a way to work together virtually and in real time.
By using Google Drive, we are able to share and access all the documents needed for specific team teachers and are able to work on documents together as well as communicate with the families of the children efficiently.
Google Drive makes it easy to keep materials organized by topic, month, year, and classroom.
Some difficulties of using Google Drive (Doc, Spreadsheets, etc.) was not being able to use them with users who were not as familiar with the technology. For example, when we created a sign up sheet for virtual family engagement sessions in the classroom, some parents directly replied through email to sign up rather than editing the document themselves and others didn’t even bother opening it up because they weren’t used to using it.
Google Drive doesn’t only organize work materials, but also personal life! As an enthusiastic planner, I enjoy using the spreadsheet application to organize resources and timelines (itinerary) for a trip that is being planned or to create and manage a budget through a pre-formatted budget template on Microsoft Word.
Overall, having a centralized source for all documents and paperwork for work and for personal life is very convenient and useful, however, there are drawbacks in terms of external/additional user’s knowledge or lack thereof the app as well. The pros definitely outweigh the cons as Google Drive allows access to a variety of media and sources to work with (Photos, Spreadsheets, Documents, Calendar, Podcasts, Meet, Slides, etc.) Because of the wide range of sources and media that the consumer can access and utilize from one centralized location, Google Drive is an essential technology worth noting, using, and involving in not only work life, but personal life as well!
